ADRIENNE BUKA: MEDIEVAL MURAL SUN-DIALS IN HUNGARY It is interesting that out of the three medieval sundials of Hungary only the latest one follows the example of the medieval ecclesiastic shadow-dials: this is the dial of Rudabánya built in the late 1300s or around 1400. The chronologically earliest dial, the one of Szentendre, represents a transitional form that is close to the modern sun-dials. The sun-dial of Mátraverebély is something quite special. Its manufacturer wanted, perhaps, to imitate a mechanical clock while maintaining also the fundamental characteristics of the sun-dials. No similar arrangement can be found among the numerous ecclesiastic shadow-dials still in existence in Western Europe.
