her). He assisted music assocations and contributed to the organisation of the first photographic exhibition in Hungary, 1891. From 1896 to 1906 he was member of parliament for the town of Tata. In Parliament he spoke for the interests of employees at railways and shipping. He was the first to study the psychological causes of railway accidents and ship disasters. Konkoly wrote many papers for Hungarian, German, Austrian and Britisch professional journals. He was also willing to lecture to the wider public and illustrated these talks with his own photographs. He became honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy at the Philadelphia University. His scientific merits were acknowledged by decorations both in Hungary and abroad. Miklos Konkoly Thege died on 16th February, 1916. His creations still survive and his name is not only preserved by the Astronomical Research Institute but also by the Konkolya asteroid (No 1445). BARTHA LAJOS: KONKOLY THEGE MIKLÓS EMLÉKEZETE (1842—1916) Konkoly Thege Miklós nemcsak a XIX. század magyarországi tudományának, de az európai csillagászatnak is kiemelkedő személyisége. Nagy szerepe volt a csillagászat egyik legfiatalabb ágának, az asztrofizikának megalapozásában, az asztrofizikai műszerek tervezésében és építésében. Magyarországon Konkoly létesített új, modern obszervatóriumot — a saját költségén — a csillagászati kutatások számára. Mint a meteorológiai intézet igazgatója, nemzetközi színvonalra emelte a magyarországi időjárás kutatást. Fiatal korától érdekelte a folyami hajózás és a vasút. Sokat foglalkozott a gőzhajókkal és a gőzmozdonyokkal. Tehetséges komponista volt, érdekelte a fényképezés technikája és művészete is. Tevékenysége jelentós nyomot hagyott a századforduló magyarországi kulturális életében.
