TANULMÁNYOK - C. Harrach Erzsébet: A Víziváros közlekedése, ipara a BFL terveinek tükrében
The Danubee, being a traditional water way of traffic, attracted trade and industry. So did the squares lying along the Fő utca (Main Street) which goes almost parallel with the river. A few ancient buildings in this area are showing still today, how industry has developed. But much more information can be got by studying the contemporary architectural plans (for approval) appended to the building permissions, stroe-houses. In the second half of the 19th century already some smaller and bigger factories settled down in the district besides workshops meeting the demands. They clearly show the changements and development in the district. Near to the bank of the Danube, serving as port for ships, there were several of citizens like pottery, baker or joinery. In the City Archives we can find the plans of the Hungarian milling industry (e.g. The Blum Mill) as well, as plans of buildings of the „service" industry (e.g. „Gőzmosó Intézet" steam laundry). The wellknown „Ganz Factory" was also founded in this area. The foundry of this plant worked here till 1962, the building declared as monument is serving now as foundry-museum. This study gives detailed information on archival plans w h ich can be found here about traffic and industry in this district. The elaboration of written documents concerning this subject would go beyond the extent of this study, which wants only to draw the attention of researchers and other interested persons on the fact, that the contemporary architectural plans and drawings in the Budapest City Archives alone are a very good illustration of the historical development of the district „Víziváros".
