THE DEVELOPMENT OF MATERIAL TESTING MACHINES* **

We better 'comprehend our measuring instruments used today .by examining the history of their development. Among numerous material testing machines, only the most wide-spread types, namely tensile, compression and bending machines for static loads will be discussed.

Requirements for the testing machine

The main parts of the universal strength tester tare (Fig. 1):

— Clamps (A),

— Load generating mechanism (B),

— Load measuring device (C),

— Machine frame (D).
