SZILÁRD: ROLAND EÖTVÖS AND THE NORTH-POLE EXPLORATION Already in 1869 the German explorer Petermann has invited Eötvös, who was at that time 21 years old, to participate in his expedition to the Arctic. Though Eötvös did not join this expedition later he was appointed by the government to be the Hungarian member of the „Association internationale pour l’étude des régions po- laires.” Several suggestions were made to apply the Eötvös torosion balance to deter- min the outlines of the Antartic or to measure the thikness of ice at Greenland.
