KRÓNIKA - S. Gazda jr.: The science historian Jolan M. Zemplén (1911–1974)

Her two-volume monography about the history of the Hungarian physics up to the end of the 18

tn century is a unic work. Earlier publications gave very little basis to this research work because they were not more than bibliographycal summaries (the collections of Károly Szabó, Géza Petrik and József Szinnyei sen. are meant hereunder). It was she who studied Intensively and wrote up first according to a common point of view the books on physics edited in latin language in Hungary and thus founded the basis for a similar study of the history of congnate sciences (mathematics, chemistry etc.). This research work is going on the path laid down by her and so the history of the Hungarian rational sciences gets slowly visible. A brief summary on this subject was written in the latest edition of 'The Soviet Encyclopedy. Her international activity as a science-historian is marked by several lectures abroad and by her research work on general history of physics. Her papers on this subject were issued in an Italian international biography-encyclopedia, in the Alhazen memorial book, in Several Slovakian and Polish scisntific journals, in the Copernicyear issues, further in the IUHPS Congress Reports. In her respective research work she could anyhow rely on some earlier Hungarian publications like the internationally well-known monography of Ágost Heller. Tie work comunenced by Jolan M.
