the aid of the above mentioned organizations more than 6000 objects have been brought to the notice of the museum so far, from which 3 420 have been put under special protection, after careful selection and examination by experts. The history of the various branches of industry is also being studied and written up. Prior to the frist World War the only technical museum in Hungary was the Transport Museum. Its collection was badly damaged during World War II; only part of it survived, which is being extended by the Ministry of Post and Tele­communication year by year. The results achieved in the field of relic collection in the different branches of industry, lead to the successive establishment of various technical museums which are being subsidized by the ministerial departments concerned. The technical museums now open to the public are the following: (year of inauguration in brackets) The Post Museum (1956) which contains mainly technical relics of the telecommunication industry. The Fire Service Museum (1957), whose material illustrating the tech­nical development of fire-fighting is unique in Europe. (Both the above technical museums are in Budapest.) The Central Museum of Mining at Sopron (1957) exhibits the historic relics of the oldest industry of Hungary. The Metallurgic Museum at Didsgyfir (1960) shows the history and development of metallurgy. The blue-dyeing industry - once an extremely important line in Hungary - has a permanent exhibition at Papa since 1962. The Water Conservancy Museum at Sl<5fok (1964) demonstrates the deve­lopment and historic relics of Hungarian water-supply economy. The scope of activity of the Office for the Collection and Registration of Technical Relics includesin addition to the operative assistance granted to the operative assistance granted to the above mentioned museums - the organization of exhibition both in Hungary and abroad.
