As a result of this the supports deteriorated within an extremely short time and required frequent replacement. The additional expenditure involved, and the recurring breakdowns in the service doomed the venture to failure. According to unwritten tradition, the collapse of the supports was "precipitated" by the carters who sensed a competitor in the railway.
