17th - Century Spectacles - An Interesting Optical Relic The theory and application of optics were an important contribution to the development of the natural science. The lenses and the optical instruments devised by using the latters (spectacles, binoculars, microscopes) were evolved by empirical methods. As the art of lense production was advancing, so went forward gradually the development of automatic equipment, independent of the individual skill of the grinder. During the excavation of the Royal Castle at Buda an interesting optical relic, a pair of clinched spectacles'were found. The material of their lenses is quartzcrystal. The interferograms taken of the surfaces of the spectacle lenses show that the lenses were worked by hand with the aid of simple tools, 'The site when the relic was discovered, the design, the material of the lenses, the finish of the metal parts and the lenses, and the contemporary political situation of the country are suggesting that the spectacles were 1 Italian or German made and originate from the 17th century. A XVIII.SZÁZADI MAGYARORSZÁGI HAMUZSIRFÓZÉS TECHNOLÓGIÁJA Közismert, hogy hazánkban a vegyipar első, erőteljesen kifejlődött ága a hamuzsír gyártása volt. Hogy a hazai hamuzsírfőzés méreteiről képet alkothassunk magunknak, említsük meg, hogy éppen 200 évvel ezelőtt kb. 200 kemencében folyt a hamuzsír előállítása, s 1764-ben Magyarországról 36 865 mázsa hamuzsírt szállítottak ki, főleg Ausztriába 1 ^. Ez a mennyiség hozzávetőlegesen 20 millió köbméter fa hamuját jelentette. ' Kevéssé közismert azonban az a tény, hogy az első vegyiparunk terméke nemcsak mennyiségét tekintve volt jelentős, hanem minőségi szempontból is figyelemreméltó volt. A Magyarországon gyártott hamuzsírt jó minősége miatt minden más fajtánál többre becsülték 5 /. Az volt az általános felfogás, hogy az angol üvegek azért olyan szép átlátszóak, minthogy magyarországi hamuzsírt használtak annak előállítására. i
