in the 1840s to the central question of the transport development and in spite of this a railway line section having a length of 176 km was constructed till 1848. The beginning of the domestic railway line construction meant an unexpected and lively demand for the engineers' work and so a lack of engineers has occurred. The first and only long distance horse tram having a length of 19,5 kmk connecting Pozsony with Nagyszombat was designed and constructed by Otto Ferenc Hieronymi (1803-50) managing director of the Danube mapping. His assigned colleagues were Gyula Lechner, Ferenc Reitter, Gusztáv Rauschmann and Gusztáv Perleberg, who can be considered as the first railway building engineers. The construction of the first steam-operated railway started on the 5. October 1844, the Hungarian Central Railway required an international staff as a consequence of the lack of engineers. The preparatory works was made by the German engineer E.Ch. Zimpel, who had acquired wxperiences in the field of the railway building in America. In the preparatory works of the railway line between Vukovar and Fiume, which became inseparable from the name of Kossuth not constructed, engineers from abroad took part as well. The first plans were elaborated by Karl Wallau and the newer ones in 1847 by the Bavarian engineer Franz Kreuter.
