The series called "Work of Art of the Month" was launched and was great success. The author writes of the growth of the collections, of the number of visitors, of the activities in international and home organizations and unions. He informs the reader of the business activity of the Museum, of the staff and salary conditions, of the technical conditions and of the development of the investments and renewals. He writes about the appropriation of the avaliable funds in which the proportions to serve visitors and to renew old infrastructure grew considerably. The study is completed with tables containing annual figures, as it is characteristic of the Museum. The rest of the Annual consists of three main parts. In the first part you can read studies about the history of the collections of the Museum of Transport, based on the research work of the scientific research workers of the Museum. Dr. Erzsébet Molnár's study: "The History of the Museum of Transport up to 1945" introduces the establishment and development of the Museum till the end of World War II. The Museum is one of the oldest technical museums in Europe. The author writes about the history of the construction work of the building, founded in 1986, about the operation, about the initial difficulties in the work of the museologists and sums up, in tables, the number of visitors. She writes about the development of the collections, about the contemporary methods and concepts of collecting and exhibiting. She gives information of the role of the institute in culture and education and also about the development of home and international relations. Attila Szabó, in his essay entitled "Computer Programming the Archive Photographs of the Museum of Transport" writes that the appearance of the relatively high capacity personal computers at available price attracted the attention of specialists, too, who deal with museum data processing and registration. The selection of the proper software which meets special requirements and which can deal with a huge number of items, demanded a significal amount of preparation and examination. Hard disks, CD ROM disks and FLOPPY Disks, capable of storing several hundred Mb-s or one or two Gb-s of data, facilitated the establishment and use of a photo data base, too. The Museum of Transport was among the first ones of the museums which obtained the proper hardwares and softwares which are necessary for such work. This modem method has facilitated and speeded up the research and processing of the original photo mterial, some 20.000 items, since 1991. The specialists of the Museum have continuously modernized the system, relying on experience, and are now prepared to process the slide stock, some 100.000 items, and the moving picture and archive audio materials, by multimedia extention. The experimental, preparatory phases and the experiences of the process during this registration work of immense importance can be read in the study. The study of János Hidvégi: "The Development of the Motor Vehicle Collection between 1980-1992" gives an account of the growth of the collection in the indicated period. The author states that the development of the collection through purchases between 1980-1992, compared with earlier times, was relatively slower, due to economic difficulties. At the same time, however, the number of vehicles, objects and other museum pieces, received as presents, rose considerably. The author considers the first cars which came down the conveyor belts of the Hungarian car manufacturing industry, which was reestablished after more than 40 years, the first Opel Astra and Suzuki Swift cars to be the most precious items of the acquisitions in the recent years. These gift cars can be seen in our permanent exhibition. 483
