Part IV. The History of the Museum Building and Protection of Objects Pál Hüttl reviews in his paper "The lOOYears History of the Building of the Transport Museum" the architectural design of the transport hall of the millenieum exhibition and the contractors on the basis of contemporary documents. The rich material of the exhibition, the demand of the public and the work of the enthusiastic experts created the basis of the extablishment of a Transport Museum, which has been opened on the 1st May, 1899. The condition of the building with decorative exterior being built with temporary charakter made a lot of problems and even the lack of space raised the issue of the final siting of the Museum. Two plans had been prepared to solve the problems. The paper gives a detailed report on the explanation and debate concerning these plans. Because of the outbreak of World War I non of the two plans could be realized. Even between the two World Wars only the most needed maintenance works could be carried out. The Autor reports in the further part of his paper on the events following the time period after World War II and informs about the organisational changes in the life of the Museum and the plans according which the war demages of the building were eliminated, enabling the opening of the Museum on the 2nd April 1966. In the final part of the paper the Author reviews the architectural preparation works of the new wing of the central building, the points of view of the projecting, the technical solutions, the implementation of construction work and the allocation of costs. Péter Elekfy - Károly Tóth: "Protection of Engineering Objects, Restoration and Storing in the Transport Museum". The Authors determine in their paper the concept of engineering objects as human creations and inform about the phases of the protection of engineering objects. The goal of the restoring is the saving of the scientific, historical and art values of museum pieces for a long time. The goal can be achieved by application of the four main elements of the restoration activity, which are the clearing, the conservation, the restoring and the reconstruction. They tell their opinion about the issue debated many times in technical and transport museums, wheter the objects should be made operable, should be operated, or not. In this connection they mention the practice of some great, foreign museums. In the next part of their paper the Authors inform about the system of restorator training in Hungary. After that they write about the restoration duties of the Transport Museum, and about the establishment and outfittings of the restoring workshops. The savint and long-time preservation of the engineerng objects are carried out in three phases, which are as follows: research, determination of the task on basis of research and execution. The research, the determination of the tasks and furthermore the denomination of technology and materials applied for the restoration are fixed in the restoration documentation. As an example is mentioned the restoration of the motorcycle of the type 250 of Weiss Manfred, about which a detailed documentation has been prepared. Finally the Authors review the storing méthodes in the Transport Museum and furthermore the relations with the partner museums. 383
