HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Imre, Gabriella: Kuan-yin with Fish
In dating the statuette our problem is eased by the beautiful oarving, the style ol the pattern applied, the high-quality gill and red lacquer, the position of the figure and at last but not at least by the basket with ihe fish, this late and popular attribute of Kuan-yin. On the basis of the first-quality wood, the lacquer and the wear of the gilt the statuette can be dated from the 18th century, however, its lively naturalistic rendering makes us to fix the date of its origin in the second half of ihe 18th century. 6 fi A Ch'ing wooden Kuan-yin given in the 1969 Catalogue of the Everson Museum's Chinese Art from the Claud Wampler and Other Collections (Synacuse, New York, p. 160.) is resembling our Kuan-yin statuette in the conlrapostal position and in the forming of the garment.
