In our opinion, two oilier blue and whites inusl come From the K'ang-hsi era. loo, ihey bolh are marked with nien haos. One of them is a rounded ginger jar. with low, unglazed ring on ihe neck. Elongated base, ihe cover is missing, [figs. 3a — b) Two third of ihe bottle is covered with decoration, ils rear is nol ornamented al all. Siiol) composition, this kind of utilizing lire surface is nol infrequent. A pheasant, ils head turned back is standing on the top of a whimsically shaped, fully stylized rock. Inside the caves of the rock grass is growing, on one side, there is a delicate tree of magnolia, on the other side, a flower of chrysanthemum in full bloom. On the bottom of ihe rock there is grass and daisy. The pelais of the chrysanthemum are shaped with geometrical regularity. The ornamentation implies the motives so often found in the art of tin 1 tilling epoch, in paintings, on silks and porcelains. Amidst the delicate, extremely thin, well drawn contours the painting well exploits the possibilities of shading. The marking of ihe style, being characteristic of K'ang-hsi porcelains are to be found on our bottles: wide, plain areas, strong contrasts, delicate, clear blue colour, meticulous portrayal of the figures, the lull swing so much characteristic of this era. The gla/.e is greyish blue, with occasional small black spots, the shade of the cobalt is deep blue. On the bottom there is K'ang-hsi nien hao in three columns, with regular calligraphy, surrounded hy a double ring: Ta Ch'ing K'ang-hsi nien chi. The mark seems to be reliable. The bol lie might have originated al the beginning of t ho 18th century. Inventory number: 53.128, height: lb. 3 cm. diameter of the base: 10.4 cm.
