As the exhibitions arranged in Vienna, Berlin etc. show, the late twenties •witnessed in Europe a mounting interest in the Chinese painting of the 20eth century. On the basis of these data and of its style the described ink painting of ('hi Pai-shih was probably painted in the late twenties or early thirties and it was possibly brought to Czechoslovakia from China by professor \. Chytil. who was a good friend of the painter. I.. I'. Ei'g. •">. Ts'ai Ho-ting. Buffalos. 1957. Album leaf, (lift of Anna Oelmacher. 43 X 33 (59 X 42) cm. Inventory number: 70.31. Anna Oelmacher, the departmental head of the National Gallery of Hungary, took a tour in 1957 in China where she visited the city llsian. met the painter members of the Artists" Society of Hsiao and from them she got nine album paintings as gifts. These leaves are either collective or single works painted just for her. They are: Chang Shih-pei ? — Ts'ai Ho-chou: Bird on a plum branch; Fang Chi-chung: Palm-leaves and a damselfly: Fin Chin­hsiu — Ts'ai Ho-ting: Two chicks under peonies; Ts'ai llo-ling: Buffalos (fig. 5.): Ho Hai­hsia: Hilly landscape with houses: K'ang Shih-yao: They are making a tunnel; Wang Pin­wei: Magnolias and a butterfly: llan Ch'iu-yen: Paprikas and cabbages: and ^ ang Ching-wo — Ts'ai Ho-chou: Bird and pine. All the nine paintings came into our collection as a gift of Anna Oelmacher. The nine album leaves are all executed on white paper and mounted on brocade of the same size. The painters show us landcapes and still lifes with simple brushstrokes. They are useful for study. Here we introduce only one of them. At the center of the painting is a buffalo in water with its big body half visible. 11 is sparingly rendered, a black irregular line defining its contour, brushstrokes in dry pale ink, here and there with some brown and blue colors, texturing its body. Behind it can be seen another buffalo's head above the water. At the lower right-hand corner the painter gives us a part of the reed drawn with several long strokes. It is executed in traditional technique, and the scene shows simplicity and tranquility. The inscription of the painter reads: ..To comrade Oelmacher as a souvenir, Ts'ai Ho-ting painted in 1957, in the Artists' Society of llsian". It is followed by a seal reading "Shan chung you eben tao" (The true Way is in the mountains). Ts'ai Ho-ting is a member of the Society of Chinese Artists. His works could be often found in Chinese magazines if arts. In December. 1 902. he, together with Ts'ai Ho-chou, took part with 50 works in the "Exhibition of Chinese Paintings" held at the Gallery of Fine Arts, Peking.
