HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Fux, Herbert: The Far Eastern Collections of the Austrian Museum for Applied Art

The emphasis is on the Chinese art, followed by the Japanese. Korea is represented only with a few pieces of ceramics and bronzes, while from Tibet there are only a few pieces. As for the other parts of the Middle and Far East are concerned, Indian art is represented with textiles and some metal vessels and Southeast Asia with several sculptures in metal and stone. This order of precedence is one of the reasons that the Far Eastern rooms at our museum, opened to the public, are only showing Chinese works of art. The other is, it was a possibility to demonstrate the whole scope of Chinese art according the principles of history of art from the beginning until the early 20th century, of course in an incomplete way, because single epochs or certain classes of art are sporadically represented or being quite absent. Moreover the lack of place in all departments of our museum demands a selection only of the precious and most characteristic pieces. The Far Eastern department has only two exhibition rooms, one for the collection of ceramics and the second which is called the "Anton Exner Hall" for the other art products (fig. I). Fig. 1.
