Flower-vase and Rock. Ink and colours on paper. Dated 1925. 83 X 50 cm. Inv. No.: 68.47. — Painted by Ch'en Pan-ting (1876—?). His own name was Ch'en Nien, often known as Ch'en Pan-ting. He was born in Shanyin, in the province of Che-kiang. In his youth he moved to Shanghai, where he made acquaintance with Wu Ch'ang-shuo, Jen Po-nien and P'u Tsuo-ying and became their pupil. As a painter of flowers and birds, he also painted landscapes and figures. On his paintings he used to affix his seals and to write calligraphy following the Chin Nung style. Belonging to an older generation, he devoted himself to combine painting with calligraphy and seals in a harmonious manner. On the back of the upper roller of our painting, we can see an inscription giving the title Ch'en Pan-ting po ku hua hui ("Antiquity and flowers", painted by Ch'en Pan-ting). Under it a iseal reads: Lan wan lou (Lan-wan Pavilion), which is taken as the seal of the former collector. On the painting at the right-hand stands a blue long-necked vase with pink peonies, white plum flowers and green leaves. Lowerleft-hand we see a rock painted in brownish, bluish-black. Both the flowers and the rock are the symbols of constancy and nobility. The painting bears two seals and an inscription. The inscription reads : Fu kui ch'i mei yi ch'ou chia p'ing chi ji wei Shu-ch'i hsiung chi hsi chih hsi Shan-yin Ch'en Nien (Riches and honour to the married couple. Painted on the occasion of my friend Shu-ch'i's happy wedding by Ch'en Nien from Shanyin in the year yi-oh'ou [1925]). The first seal can be read a,s Ch'en Nien. The isecond is Pan-ting. A third seal of four characters, placed at the lower corner, is unidentified. In 1958 the shop Jung-pao-chai (Peking) published nine reproductions of his flowerpaintings in an album, entitled Ch'en Pan-ting hua hui ts'e (Album of Ch'en Panting's Flower-paintings). Another book was published in 1959 by Jenmin-meishuch'upanshe, containing 47 of his best works.
