Fig. 11. Iran. Clay jar in the form of an amphora. Made of fine whitish clay. Short foot, upwards widening body. The neck is vertical, the rim turns down. The modelling is somewhat slanting. There are two vertical handles on the shoulder, with small knobs at the top. From the lower quarter upwards the body of the jar is covered with crackled opaque turquoise glaze. The moulded relief decoration around the shoulder consists of four birds and coiled foliage. This decoration is not placed symmetrically to the handles. Height 27 cm, diam. of the foot 9.2, diam. at the rim 11 cm» Inv. No. 67.149. In some places the body of the jar has been repaired and retouched. Rayy, late 12 th-early 13 th century. A gift by dr. E. Unger, London, in 1965. Earlier the jar belonged to the collection of Sir Eldred Hitchcock and was published by Arthur Lane­in: Islamic pottery in the collection of Sir Eldred Hitchcock.
