HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Cseh, Éva: Some Early Imari Porcelains

Fig. 3. Jar, Imari, end of XVII th century tulip-like flower. The ornament of the lid is divided into three fields. In one of them we can see branches with leaves, in the other branches with flowers and a landscape on the bank in the third one. There is an onion-shaped button painted brown on the top of it. It is a common export piece. As to form and style we can find a similar one on page 153. of "Old Imari". The drawing of the peonias is similar to the ones on fig. 64. According to these examples the jar could have been made at the end of 17 th or at the beginning of 18 th century. The next piece, a small balluster vase 7 excels with its fine form and fresh, harmonious decoration (Fig. 4.). The base is low with a wide ring, the bottom deepens and is painted brown. There are silver settings on the mouthhole and inside the neck, while on the shoulder we can see two independently formed, coloured butterflies. Both sides are decorated with long-stalked chrysantemums drawn easily and there is a small cloud motif below the neck. The stalks and partly the leaves are painted by underglaze blue, the flowers are red, the leaves show green, greyish-violet and yellow polychrome enamel colours. Thecoba lt has a violet shade, at some places it is stained and black, the glaze is greenish, full of small bubbles. ' Inv. Nr. 50.687. Height: 20,8 cm.
