The rendering itself is to a certain extent drawn to the life and it is individual. We can find at the same time here and there primitive errors especially in representing the guns and canon firings. The battle-scenes remind us a little to the stage-tricks and effects especially those of Chinese troops. The traditional Chinese painting conception seems to be effective in rendering spaces and mainly in that of landscapes, though the tendency of a perspective rendering is highly to be felt. The above treated wood-cuts can't show us any high artistic level, nor the most of New Year's prints, nevertheless they are worth of attention. They are interesting and instructive documents of a critical period of China. m
