HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Huszár, Flórián: Three Wood-cuts from the Time of Boxer Rising

Fig. 1. already the 9 th June Tz'uhsi ordered the troops of Tung to march to Peking in order to slaughter the boxers 4 . This was refused by Tung and later on, his troops took part in the blockading of the legations. The name of Tung Fu-hsiang is to be read in the title of the 3 rd cut. It's a fact that he was not there. 5 The date is erroneous again, because it took place the 10 th of Seventh month (the 4 th of August) according to the Moon calendar and not the 6 th of Seventh month, and it couldn't be finished with a victory of Chinese troops, because after the battle Peits'ang fell into the hands of the imperialists. It is right in the text, that the Russian troops suffered the greatest loss. The Japanese troops are taking a flight and it is proved by the text as well. It's also a fact, that the losses of Japanese troops were nearly as enormous as those of Russian ones. 6 It follows that the pictures were not made on the very site or near to it. The informations are uncertain. The role of Tung (chün-men) is everywhere highly emphasized. Tung chün-men is all over the place, and he either wins or at least stops the aggressors. To sum up, it's a case of a legend-formation, the hero of which is Tung Fu-hsiang. As to the provenance only one indication is to be read on these wood-cuts. On the 1 st page we can read an indication Hongkong Newspaper Publ. House. Besides, the identity of the artist who made the cuts, the place of edition as 4 See the 3 rd note: 77. and 71. pp. 5 Ibid. pp. 126-127. 6 Ibid. p. 127.
