HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM - MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Horváth, Tibor: A Carved Lacquer Ting with the Mark of Hsüan-te
Fig 4. Mark of Hsiian-te The question of dating the ting is rather difficult, as in the case of the majority of Ming lacquers. We can use well the catalogue of The Arts of the Ming Dynasty exhibition of the Oriental Ceramic Society, but we also share, in some respects, the despair of Fritz Low-Beer about the question of dating the Ming lacquers 10 . Until further investigations, we cannot give credit to the Hsiian-te mark, although the deep carving could verify such an early dating. We do not know exactly when the combination of red lacquer with chocolate brown upper-level w 7 as started, so we cannot rely upon this criterion either. On stylistical consideration alone, the possible dating most likely covers the period of the end of the 15 th beginning of the 16 th century. F.
