The artist intended to give a summary of the type of Indian woman living in herself as a symbol or a summing up. Notwithstanding the technical perfection, the total effect is more decorative than monumental. 71X38.7 cm. Inventory number 65.102. V. H. Fig. 10. India: Krishna and the Milkmaids. Beginning of the 20 th century. Tempera on paper. This subject is one of the most liked and most repeated scenefrom the Hindu mythology. Next to the naive representation of the space, trees and human figures, the animals are drawn realistically although in a strong decorative style. The picture is flat, the space is indicated with levels, one imposed upon the other,, according to the tradition of the folk art. In the foreground, in the lowest level deers and blossoming lotus dominate the scenery. The second level, that is the central part is filled with a mountain chain made up of several smaller mountains. In the third level, which is the background, the depths of the forest are opened. The richly bejewelled blue-skinned Krishna, playing on his flute appears on the clearing surrounded on two sides by fairytale-trees. The milkmaids are dressed colourfully as they approach him with dancing steps. 24.3 X 17.5 cm. Inventory number: 65.100. V. H„
