and, in a place, following the drawing, it even perforates the wall. The relief is extended to every inch of the tube. In the main section stands one of the garden pavilions, a small studio, opened at the front, where a lady is sitting at a table, holding a brush in her right hand, and pressing down a scroll with the left hand. A man is standing before her while in front of the longer side of the pavilion, a servant boy brings in a cup of tea. Behind the pavilion, pawlonia-trees, bananas and bamboos are seen. By turning the brush-holder around we can proceed in the garden, turning into the lane with low fences on both sides which follows the banks of the pond with an old pine tree on its shore. Another path brings us up to the other pavilion which is just a roof supported by four beams. The flat surface of the rock is an unexpected contrast to the otherwise detailed carvings. Our specimen is almost identical with a piece from the Palace Museum collection (Chinese Art Treasures, Washington, 1961 — 62, fig. 225). We may suppose that both were made in the same workshop, well-known in its time, in serial, as much liked pieces. T. BL
