HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Polonyi, Péter: Some Inside-Painted Chinese Snuff Bottles

Fig. 7. Yeh Chung-san: Inside-painted snuff bottle from 1907 (No. 50.410) (front) Fig. 8. Yeh Chung-san: Inside-painted snuff bottle from 1907 (No. 50.410) (back) blue, white and pink colours. Finished rather roughly, the piece is of what might be termed a commercial character. Since the appearance of large bottles may be put at a later date, 30 it dates probably from the later period of the artist, or is not a genuine work. Our museum possesses two most exquisitely painted pieces of Meng Tzu-shou, who is an outstanding figure of the second generation. Made of amber, the bottle Nr. 50.401 (h. : 6.1 cm) has the shape of a vase; fishes are painted inside. According to the inscription „Mao-sheng chung-hsia hsie yii Chingshih Hsi-ku-hsüan Meng Tzu-shou" („ Painted by Meng Tzu-shou in the second month of summer of mao-sheng year at the Pavilion Study of Ancient in the capital") it was made in 1908. Since the artist's earliest piece guarded in the Chicago Art Institute dates back to 1904, the present one still belongs to his early period, characterised, according to Cammann, by the representation offish. 31 Made of smoky topaz, the flat oval bottle Nr. 3268 (h. : 6.6 cm) bears no date, but is signed: „Meng Tzu-shou tso" („Made by Meng Tzu-shou"); square negative seal with the vertical text ,,Tzus-hou". On the front side there is a carefully painted colourful illustration of a Pu Sung-ling story with three figures, bearing 30 Cammann OA p. 89. 31 Cammann H JAS p. 323.
