HOPP FERENC MÚZEUM — MUSÉE FERENC HOPP - Tóth, Edit: Terracottas from the Gupta Period

Fig. 6. Head of a young man wearing a turban we find the flower-like decoration on her right cheek, near the ear. This supports my opinion that it represents make-up of some sort or tatooing. Stylistically it also belongs to the Gupta period. Height: 4,7 cm. Figure 6: Its place or origin is determined. It was found in Mathura. The man wears a twisted turban ending in two bow-shaped forms. The right side of the turban is missing. The face is round, plump; his expression is tranquil and meditative. To some extent it reminds us of a statuette in the British Museum. 8 It is darker, redder and rougher than the previous objects. Height: 3,5 cm. Figure 7: The workmanship and material of the head of this man is similar to the former. The face is long with somewhat prominent cheekbones, which give the impression of being Mongoloid. The headdress, reminding us of a chef's cap, is held at the forehead by a band. The hat widens as it rises. He has double round earrings. As in piece 6 it is of darker red, rougher terracotta. We may assume it is also from Mathura. It is an excellent example of close observation and an expressive portrait.
