BASICS BEATRIX The Representations of St. George Square The name of the square is dating back to the 18 th century. In medieval times it was called St. Sigismund square or market as it used to be a market place and the provostal church St. Sigismund stood there. Later it got its name after the "Zeughaus" standing there, and following the 1852 erection of the Hentzi monument it was called after it. The study is listing all the important descriptions of the square and its buildings. These sources were increasingly fashionable guide books and albums published in the 19 th century. The most important graphic works are also listed. The landscape series of the mid 19 th century made by outstanding artists of the age have representations either of the square itself, or different famous buildings and palaces standing there. Another source for the representations are the guide books and other publications on the cities of Buda and Pest, including series of maps as well. By the turn of the century illustrations were changed for photographs and as a result of major changes in the city structure the square lost its importance. 136
