PESTI ÁSATÁSOK = EXCAVATIONS CONDUCTED IN PEST = RASKOPKI V PEST - Irásné Melis Katalin: Beszámoló a középkori Pest város területén végzett régészeti kutatások eredményeiről 313-348
the construction of the town wall in the late Middle Ages the medieval network of streets became definite. Besides the north-east main thoroughfare leading through Váci Street from the Hatvan gate to the main square near the Parish Church, the route proceeding from the Kecskemét gate along Kecskeméti Street and continuing through Károlyi Street in Petőfi Street became the third main axis of the town. Along the main thoroughfares the stone houses of the better-to-do Pest burghers and landlords were placed, here and there decorated with distinguished stone carvings. The majority of the buildings cf the town was destroyed under the Turkish rule, and the surviving ones came gradually to be pulled down or reconstructed. Out of the oldest buildings of Pest only the City Parish Church and a few sections of the town wall of the late Middle Ages survived: modest relics of one of the most important medieval towns of Hungary.
