JÚLIA ALT MANN RECENT RESEARCH IN THE AREA OF THE KING' S AND QUEEN' S CASTLES AT ÓBUDA At the site No. 2-3-4, Kálvin Lane, Budapest, 3rd district, works of uncovering the king's and or queen' s castles of Óbuda have been, in course several times since 1908. Parallel with the city reconstruction works, the author was working in the sites No. 1., 3. and 7. Kálvin Lane. m The purpose of her research work conducted at present was to clear up the eastern side and the fortification system of the castle (Fig. 65. ). A length of about 60 m . of the eastern inner wall of the castle was opened up from the northern to the southern corner. Two periods of the wall were determined, its lower part was built in the 13th century and the one above it, consisting of rubble, in the 14th century. Also the eastern section of the southern castle wall was uncovered. It was founded on undisturbed clay. Over its socle built of two courses of rubble-stones followed two courses of broad-stones; the further part of the upward wall was made of rubble. On the broadstones mason' s marks of the letter "A" c$>uld be found (Fig. 66/b. , Plate 264. ). The eastern and northern walls of the castle were not built together, the depths of their foundations are different, too (Plate 268. ). The eastern wall was built next to the earlier southern castle wall. The author also tried to find the outer wall of the castle at the eastern side, still, as a result of its having been disturbed in recent times, she could not discover its traces. Within the castle wall several medieval and Roman walls and courses of stonework were found, of which the functions will have to be determinded by further research. The termination of the sanctuary of the St. Elizabeth chapel with two buttresses was opened up (Plate 262. ). To the south of the church the eastern file of piers of a peristyle partly found earlier and dated to the 15th century was brought to light by research (Plate 266.).The piers were identical in size and artistic form, with the earlier, uncovered ones. The eastern file of piers had been built on top of earlier walls brought to an identical level. The explanation of the present amorphous forms of the walls is hoped to be given by further research (Plate 268.). The eastern wall of the castle and the file of piers do not run parallel with one another but narrow towards the south. Between the corner piers and the castle wall a walling was found which reminds of a threshold (Plate 267. ). The author is confident that the elaboration of the finds and further works of uncovering will throw light upon a great number of problems of the history and of the ground-plans of the king' s and queens' s castles of Óbuda. 253
