MARGIT NÉMETH A FURTHER EPIGRAPHIC MONUMENT FROM AQUINCUM OF THE VISIT OF SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS IN THE YEAR 202 A. D. From the southern side of the market place at today' s Kórház Street Budapest, 3rd district a limestone base came to light, originally the center of the Aquincum legionary camp. (Inv. No. 70.10.19. ) The stone monument is gravely damaged, the upper part and the left corner of the field bearing the inscription is broken off, thus relying on the existing left side the original size could be determined. (Its width was 54, its height 45 cm. ,see Plate 204.)rhe inscription could be completed as follows:(Plate 203.)/. /pro salute Impp (eratorum duorum)/L(ucii) Sept(imii) severi et An/ tonin i Augg(ustorum duorom) /L(ucius)Baeb(ius) Caecilianus/^ le g(atus) Augg(ustorum duorom) pr(o)pr(aetore)/ ob re duc(tam)leg(ionem) II Adi(utricem). Several possibilities offer themselves for completing the name of the deity missing in the first line, bearing in mind the Pannonian inscriptions set up in the honour of the two emperors, e.g. I O M, Victoriae Augustae, and probably also a statue was erected on the base. Relying on this recently found inscription, it can be considered already a proven fact that the visit of the emperors took palce at the time when the office of governor was held by L. Baebius Caecilianus. (As to the person of the governor and the visit of the emperors, see the bibliography under notes 2-9. ) Also the legio II Adiutrix took part in the Parthian war and arrived at its permanent garrison returning from the east together with the two emperors and with the other troops travelling home to the west. In its absence the legio IIII Flavia of Viminacum was stationed at Aquincum. Up to the present the date of this substitution was debated, since there is an inscription reporting about the IIII Flavia having been stationed here, and, at the same time, it also makes mention of governor Q. Caecilius Crepereianus (Plate 205.). (Cf. réf. 12, 13, 14.) The recently found inscription doubtlessly indicates the return of the legio II Adiutrix from the second Parthian war and, at the time of the imperial visit, the governor was L. Baebius Caecilianus. However, at its return, the legio II Adiutrix met here with the legio IIII Flavia, which then returned to its permanent garrison soon. Most probably also the change of governor took place then; the more so, because in those years governors were holding their offices for two years. (Note 15.) Consequently, the said change of governor ensued either at the time of the imperial visit, or immediately thereafter. Then again, the legio IIII Flavia left Aquincum already during the governorship of Q.Caecilius Rufinus. Thus both inscriptions can be dated to the year 202 A.D. one to spring, the other to a somewhat later time. (Plates: 203-205) 197
