ANNAMÁRIA FACSÁDY PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE EXCAVATION OF THE SOUTHERN DEFENSIVE WORKS OF THE LATE ROMAN FORT The southern section of the Roman fort built in the first part of the 4th century A.D. was opened up in the plots of the southern row of houses of Obuda Street, as well as in those of No. 166 and 169 Lajos Street during the years 1974-75. The ground-plan, which was partly uncovered, in the course of the excavations, partly completed.shows a peculiar from. On the 300m,long wall section of the fort the horseshoe-shaped side towers were built every 30 metres. The tower preserved in the most intact condition was found at No. 8 Óbuda Street. The tower of a regular U shape adjoined the arching wall of the fort at an obtuse angle, its inner measurements are 4. 0 x 7. 5 m. The walls of the fort and towers are characterized by an identical building technique; the stones of irregular shape were poured over by highly limy mortar. Stones processed for other purposes were used for flagging; as it appears from the imprints preserved in the mortar, the stones were often profiled. On account of the brick-dust contents, the plaster is often pink in colour, hard and terazzo-like. The average thickness of the wall of the fort is 3.0 m., still, in certain places it even amounts to 3. 5 m. , - that of the towers is only 2. 20 and 2. 60 m. The levels of the towers are paved with small stones, the floors are flush with the height of the road following the wall of the fort from the inside. Between two towers the wall of the fort tends inwards, toward the inside of the camp; the deflection is 7 m., measured from the imaginary straight line connecting the entrances of the towers. At the southernmost turning point of the arcs the side towers were erected; these, protruding in this way from the face ot the wall, could even ensure more the flanking of the enemy. The modification of the groundplan was connected with a change in the art of war and with defensive arrangements coming' into the foreground. The investigation is going to be continued during the year 1976 also, that an opportunity could be presented for observing the periods of reconstruction and the inner edifices.
