and directed to the eastern front, whence it did not return to Pannónia any more. Under Philippus Arabs the campsite of Ulcisia castra was already occupied by a stronger detachment of the legio II adiutrix. In the „Appendix" of this paper the author studies the 2nd century history of the cohors I Ulpia Pannoniorum (milliaria) . The troop organized at the beginning of the 2nd century may be shown to have been in the framework of the Upper Pannonian exercitus up to 163. Its garrison seems to have been already Solva. About 164/5 the cohors was transferred to Upper Moesia where it had to defend the mining district near Stojnik. Contrary to the opinion held hitherto, the cohors did not take part in the Parthian campaign of L. Veras. On the other hand, it was active in the Germanian —Sarmatian wars under Marcus. It was in connection with the campaigns of the latter that it returned to Upper Pannónia where it was stationed, as it may be proved, in the Solva camp again from the eighties on. 57
