Tanulmányok - Dezső László: Typological Comparison of Root Structuring in Uralic and Early Indo-European. [Az uráli és korai indoeurópai tőstruktúrák tipológiai összevetése] 3
34 LASZLO DEZSŐ The share of front vowels in Vi position is low (22 of 105), especially after k (5 of 52) and t (3 of 18). After k, t, n, l, s the percentage of front vowels is lower than in Vi position in generál: 20.1% : 32.5%, the différences are considérable in the case of e - 3.8% : 10.2% and ä - 5.7% : 10.2%, but not for / - 11.4% : 12.1%. This is caused by the infrequency of front vowels following k, t. The data are reliable but approximate, because Décsy counted all Uralic etymons, not only the certain ones. In the Uralic etymons of UEW the initial k- and t- were followed by front vowels but rarely; however in Finno-Ugric the frequency of front vowels in V2 position is much higher: kä (9), ke (20), ki (16, i/ü - 12), k + x (1) - 46 etymons of 85; tä (5), te (7), // (4, i/ü - 3) - 16 etymons of 24. The number of etymons with initial n is lower in FU that in U: 4 of 8 have front vowel in V2 position: nä (3), ni (1). The frequency of front vowels after / is relatively high: 10 of 18: lä (4), le (4), // (2, i/ü - 1). The distribution of vowels after s- is similar: 10 front vowels of 17: sä (6), se (1), si (i/ü-2), sü(l). The évaluation of thèse data from the point of view of possible palatalization seems to indicate that (1) vowel e could also be velar in PreU; (2) the number of front vowels was very low after k, t and also n, but the number of the latter is small; (3) in Finno-Ugric the share of front vowels is much higher after k and / which can show that in the new etymons front vowels had no palatalizing effect, because palatalization was no longer active. However, such an assumption should be checked on the évolution of PFU to dialects. The forms of the etymons show a late stage, not of PreU, this explains the fact that the variation i/ü is equally high in the Uralic and Finno-Ugric etymons. 2.
