Kisebb közlemények - Sherwood, Peter: Ob-Ugrian ’consume’ 119

OB-UGRIAN 'CONSUME' 125 Finally in this section, we may mention the fact that there seem to be only two verbs of Hungárián which possess three third person Singular forms (rather than the normal maximum of two) in the present tense: one is the cognate of our verb (esz, eszik, eszi 'essen'), the other is a Turkic loan (basz, baszik, bassza 'ficken'). The invariably negative Subject and verb-initial, petrified word-order of the archaic expressions esz a penész/rozsda/méreg/unalom Ί/something am/is consumed by mould/rust/fury/boredom' may also be relevant to discussions of the term 'Ugrian'. -CONTROL SENTENCES These subdivide into two groups: B(l) POSITIVE (OR AT LEAST NEUTRAL) EFFECT AND B(2) NEGATIVE EFFECT (cf. 'POSITIVE' v. 'NEGATIVE' sexual intercourse and eating in (A) above). B(l) POSITIVE EFFECT. The meaning here is 'emit heat and/or light'. The issue is not so much whether these forms are transitive or intransitive (Kulonen 1989. 183), as the fact that the verb is atelic, without a special or particular goal. As with A(l), these represent normal processes or eternal truths (rather like 'The sun rises in the East') and there is no marking on either NP or VP; and, of course, only 'present tense' forms occur. naj töt das Feuer tej tij brennt jämas (das Feuer) л ел brennt gut töram+ul'ä das Polarlicht tea у leuchtet vuoj+polwas ipsa tij die Kerze brennt schlecht sam die Kerze tet brennt WW 636b DEWOS 713 WW 636b WW 636b DEWOS 713 Nyelvtudományi Közlemények 94. 1994-1995.
