JASA 63 (1978) : 1223—1225 The Beginnings of Speech Perception \ by MÁRIA GÓSY The author has made an attempt to analyze the process of speech perception in infants and children. First, a survey is given about the investigations carried out on this topic so far. Then the author's experiments with her own children are presented. Further -more the conclusions of a hypothetized development, confirmed by empirical data, are discussed. The author deals with the mechanisms and évolution of hearing, the role hearing plays in understanding, and with the interrelation of hearing and understanding. In the author's opinion the development of speech perception is based upon the following principles. (i) The process of language acquisition consists of complementary parts, i.e.
