NÁDASDY The existence of proper nouns in Hungárián is not in the least denied by anybody — including linguists. The first part of the présent paper tries to show, however, that the existence of proper nouns has ne ver been scientifically verified. Summing up all current descriptive publications on present-day Hungárián proper nouns the authors point out their irrelevant, unspecific and illogical Statements and conclusions. (These are mainly concerned with semantics and orthography.) In the sedond part a corpus of NPs is structurally analyzed. The authors attempt to classify the NPs of the corpus; and the analysis shows that in spite of the current descriptions the proper noun can sufficiently be described only on the syntactic levél, through the différent occurrences of NPs as objects of verbs. The authors are aware of the fact that proper nouns belong first of all to the field of semantics and logic. Still, they consider their paper as an initial but indispensable step to a real description of the Hungárián proper noun — as a linguistic category.
