12 NEWYORKI FIGYELŐ 1999. december 1. WORLD NEWS (Collected by World Jewish Congress) (Continued from the previous page.) Two Germans have been fined by a Berlin court for raising their right arms in a banned Nazi salute at a soccer international in Poland in 1996, during I which 500 German supporters of their country’s team went on a rampage, ripping up seats and chanting, “We are in Poland to beat up the Jews.” Although the incident took place in Poland, where the salute is not illegal, the court ruled that the gesture’s impact had been felt in Germany since the match had been aired live on German television. * Lawyers for Hans Muench, facing trial in France for alleged brutality against inmates at the Auschwitz death camp ! during World War II, claim that the defendant’s mind has deteriorated, and that he is too ill to stand trial. Last year, Muench gave an interview on French radio, defending and supporting the gassing of Gypsies at the camp. * Around and About: In what was the worst act of violence against the Jewish Community of Christchurch, New Zealand, the city’s synagogue was hit several times by air gun pellets during Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. There are some 5,000 Jews living in New Zealand. * Members of the Israeli Nature and Reserve Authority have been training rangers from several African countries such as Kenya, Senegal, and Chad, to assist them in putting an end to the hunt of endangered species. Israel is also providing the rangers - whose battle against hunters is one of life and death - with light aircraft and night vision equipment. * The Israel Museum in Jerusalem has received Torah scrolls and interior sections of the Tzedek Veshalom Synagogue of Paramaribo, the capital of the former Dutch colony of Suriname. Built in 1737, the synagogue is no longer in use; the 200-member Suriname Jewish community uses a more recently built synagogue for services. * Jewish doctors are threatening to boycott a conference of the Australasian Jewish Medical Federation planned for January 2000, in CofFs Harbor, Australia, unless the town’s mayor and one of its councilors resign or retract reported anti- Semitic comments. The two officials head the local chapter of Christian Identity, whose parent body has reported ties to America’s Ku Klux Klan. * Kuwaiti customs officials have caught Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi regime trying to profit by smuggling into India some 250 tons of baby formula and bottles supplied by the UN intended as humanitarian aid for Iraqi citizens. According to the British newspapt The Telegraph, the money would have been used to bolster the Iraqi military and to keep Saddam Hussein’s family in luxury. The first Rosh Hashanah prayers in 50 years have been held in the Shanghai synagogue Ohel Rachel in celebration of the Jewish New Year. The services were attended by 150 people. Restoration of the synagogue, which was founded in 1920, began in 1981 with the cooperation of the Israeli Embassy in Beijing, the Consulate General in Shanghai and the municipality of Shanghai. Only 200 Jews currently reside in Shanghai. The synagogue will also serve as a community center and museum commemorating the larger Jewish community, which had lived there in the past.
