Summary
SUMMARY The Literature of Late Humanism in Sárospatak The primary purpose of the book is to clarify the true meaning of „late humanism” mainly based on the theories of some German experts of the question. Secondly; it describes the European predecessors of the Hungarian Protestant humanist schools and points out their model-giving features. Afterwards comes the case-study of the school of Sárospatak, from its very beginnings and all the collected data concerning the Calvinist pastors and tutors of the region. János Balsaráti Vitus, Balázs Szikszai Fabricius, Izsák Fe- gyverneki and Demeter Krakkai are persons of special importance. As there are not any surviving school-registers from this period, we had to use secondary sources, in order to reconstruct (partially) the list of students studying here. These personal data are followed by the description of the details of the Hungarian and foreign educational network through which the Reformed College of Sárospatak became a vivid part of the humanist Republic of Letters. The majority of the intellectuals of Sárospatak were first of all authors of Latin-speaking literary works: they composed - among others - epistles, orations, pieces of occasional poetry, lists of words, polemic works and theological ones. At the end of this literary survey, the book intends to analyse the social background of the students and a highly objective list is given about all the persons who played an important role in the birth and development of the College of Sárospatak.
