A zsidó népesseg száma településenként 1840–1941 (1993)

INTRODUCTION

The data of Table 1 are separately detailed by the Trianon area and by the area annexed in 1941; naturally the data of Table 2 are given only in one summarization. In the case of both tables the régiónál grouping is the following: Summary of county towns " " " Summary of counties " " " " Summary of municipal towns Their summarization is detailed in Table 3. Besides — as it was pointed out above - among the summary data are published alsó the data with regard to the population of religions other than the Israelite (generally, of Christian religions) "classified as Jews" in a breakdown by denominations and by their Israelite ascendants. Separately according to the classifications of the laws of 1939 and 1941. In Table 4 the county-line data by the two criteria are followed by the data of municipal towns; in Table 5 the comparison of religions, Israelite ascendants and sexes is published in a breakdown by Hungary and Budapest. * Finally, somé conceptual remarks with regard to the data used, to the data processings of the population censuses and to the time points. In fact, the data regarding 1840 are taken from the volume published by Elek Fényes between 1836 and 1840 and, consequently, probably refer to 1830-1835. (Elek Fényes: The present State of Hungary and of the areas annexed to it in statistical and geographical aspects, Pest, 1836-1840 volumes 1-6.) According to the population census of 1910, in Croatia and Slavonia there lived 20,000 Israelite persons and, consequently, no data are published either in the régiónál part or in the part devoted to the processing of combined data. (The publication of the data of Croatia and Slavonia is not planned either in the volumes of the series regarding national minority and ethnic groups.) The data of the population of religions other than the Israelite, "classified as 3ews" on the basis of the originally processed tables, differ, in somé cases, from those publised earlier. The present volume has been prepared in the framework of the research with serial number 2483 of the National Social Research Fund "Historical gazetteers and the population data of historical Hungary." The major part of the work was performed within the Department of Population Data Surveys of the Hungárián Central Statistical Office. The publication of the volume was helped alsó by the working assistance of the Ministry of Interior. It is hoped that this volume may alsó be part of the process of the closing down of a historical period and can provide data — which, though familiar, have not yet been published in similar detailizations — for every person interested in the subject whether in Hungary or abroad.
