ELŐSZÓ

In the volume containing the absolute figures of Felvidék, a separate methodologie chapter has been included. It is to be taken into account while using and interpreting the percentage data, too. In that same volume, district-level data (both in absolute figures and percentage distributions) were alsó published. Thus, we not repeat these in the present publication, while the already published percentage distribution of summary data is included again. Besides, this volume alsó contains the index of locality names. In accordance with recent use, the table of contents and the preface have been translated into English. I already mentioned in the preface written to the volume containing the absolute figures of Transylvania: „It should be pertinent to have the possibility to publish, besides these volumes, the series containing the percentages by localities according to the spatial distribution of mother tongues (nationalities) and in order to stress the changes in time. In the event the research may continue, the publications with absolute numbers could be followed by - or even made in parallel with - those containing percentage distributions." Thus, on the basis of these reflections and with the help of the OKTK, we are now publishing the nationality (mother tongue) data according to percentage distribution. To conclude, we hope, this publication will provide the means to fill a recognized need, incorporating up-to-date principles and scientifíc analyses. Budapest, March 1996 Deputy President 10
