FOREWORD
Out of our available data concerning ethnic and confessional structure of population at various censuses, we are sending you (on diskette) the following data by counties, towns and communes: — Population by nationalities at the censuses of 1930, 1956, 1966, 1977 and 1992; — Population by mother tongue at the census of 1992; — Population by religion at the census of 1992. Concerning the results of 1930 census, we are sending you the second volume, including data on the nationality, mother tongue and religion, by localities. Although we have data on mother tongue at the census of 1966 and 1977, we regret we could not put them at your disposal, being kept in our archives as printed tables and the information are presented only by former administrative-territorial distributions in force at the date of the respective censuses, therefore they could not be used for comparison. For the censuses of 1921, 1941 and 1948, we have no data by nationalities, mother tongue or religion, by localities. If necessary, we could provide your expert with methodological information or of any other nature. We hope we were useful sending our data which could help your ongoing comparative studies. Please, accept, my highest consideration. Sincerely yours, Alexandru Radocea" As shown in the reply, the 1992 census data on the population composition by mother tongue and religion are alsó made available and, indeed, are published in the present volume although the title does not refer to these data. The volume previously published on Transylvania is of a different territorial breakdown than the present issue, and, therefore the data in the two volumes are not comparable. Besides remarks concerning the difference in territorial breakdown, a number of notes on definitions and methodology are to be found in the section "Methodological notes" that follow. 13
