194. According to the processed and verified population census data, in 1850, the actual population size of Transylvania was 2/173 ,472 which differs somewhat from the population size of 2 .073 ,737 published in the official 19 Austrian statistics and from the population size of 2,074,202 figuring in Bielz's book. The difference is insignificant and originates in the corrections of the minor numerical errors of the additions of the original figures. Further, on the basis of our source, some main results of the population census will be summed up. First, the size and distribution of the population by districts: 2 0 District of Gyulafehervar 430 >024 District of Kolozsvar 423,074 District of Nagyszeben 540,272 District of Retteg 241,315 District of Udvarhely 367,363 First and Second Roumanian Regiments 71,424 Transylvania, total 2 ,073 ,472 Since between 1786 and 1850 the area of Transylvania did not change practically, and by adding the county of Szilagy an area of approximately of the same size may be obtained, population development can be monitored until 1977 / 2 2 Year of the Population Population Average yearly Growth 1786 = 100 population size growth growth total yearly average census percentage 1786 1 ,440 ,986 + 1 ,546 ,129 + + 1850 2 ,073 ,472 527 ,343 8 ,240 34.1 0.53 134 -1 1857 2 ,172 ,748 99 ,276 14 ,182 4-8 0.69 140.5 1900 2 ,684 ,291 511 ,543 11,896 23.5 0.55 173.6 1910 2 ,908 ,507 224 ,216 22 ,422 8.4 0,84 188.1 1977 4 ,385 ,954 1 ,477 ,447 22 ,051 50.8 0,76 283.7 +Without the population of the Military Frontier Zone + + Together with the population of the Military Frontier Zone (Bielz, o.c., p. 156) As the figures show, between 1850 and 1977 the population increased more than twofold and since 1786 its growth has been almost threefold. However, the rate of population growth cannot be regarded as high since the yearly average growth remained under 1 percent in every period observed. Population increase was lower between 1786 and 1850 and 1900., i. e. throughout the whole nineteenth centrury than after 1900, i. e. in the twentieth century. Formerly, the rates of population growth had been retarded by epidemics and very high mortality rates while between and during the two world wars the population of Transylvania was reduced by grave human losses and significant out-migrations which could not be completely compensated by migrants from other parts of Roumania. The data lines of the 1850 population census in Transylvania correspond to 2 741 localities whose breakdown by legal status was the following:
