sector the role of the industries relating to the traditional functions of the state is getting more and more determinative. According to the data of the 1996 microcensus, 61 percent of the employees in the public sector worked in public administration, education, health and social services. After finishing of the privatisation process a further increase in this proportion can be expected, as a result of a decrease in the number and ratio of employees occupied by state-owned employers in manufacturing, electricity and transport. Both members of nearly one fifth of active earner couples worked in the public sector, while more than quarter of them were employed by co-operative-owned and privately owned employer. The proportion of those couples, in which the husband found employment at co-operative-owned or priváté owned employer, whilst the wife in the public sector, was significant (20 percent). According to data by age group, the more aged the couple, the higher proportion work both in the state sector. The lowest proportion of couples working in the public sector occurred in primary industries (agricultural activity) while the tertiary industries including public administration, education and health employ to the greatest extent the couples employed in the public sector. Analysing education, health and social services separately, the high proportion of couples occupied in the public sector becomes more apparent. It springs from the nature of the industries mentioned above, that females (wives) ha ve a higher proportion among the employed. The husband of 39 percent of the wives employed in these industries at state-owned employer worked alsó in the public sector. That is to say, these are the couples in which both members belong to the stratum of public servants with a relative low income.
