BEVEZETŐ

INTROD UCTION The results of the 1996 microcensus are published in a series of volumes by the Central Statistical Office. The first volume of the series is the publication entitled "Population and Housing Characteristics", which summarizes the most important results of the survey. The volumes focusing on various specific topics, are published subsequently. The present volume provides detailed region-based spatial Information on economic activity and occupational composition. As known, in Hungary efforts have been made for a long time to form régiónál systems using larger spatial units covering two or three counties. The regions didn 't interfere with the soverignty of the counties, but provided possibility to examine larger units mutual dependent on each other. The preparation for joining the EU made it neccessary to repeat the revision of the arrangement of regions. The aim of the revision was to create a system which, eliminating earlier problems, meets the demands of the EU on data providing. During the revision had to form such a system, which - eliminating the earlier problems - meets the demands of the EU on information providing. To this was needed to conform to the NUTS, the EU's five-class spatial nomenclature. The arrangement of regions practically adopts the second level of the NUTS. (The first level is the country itself.) The XXI. Act of 1996 for country planning and country developing - with regards for EU's demand - defines the 'statistical-planning region' as follows: "The planning-statistical region is a contiguous unit covering area of several counties (or the capital), bordering by the administrative frontiers of the counties." The principle layed in the act is defined by decision of the parliament on 10. march 1998. which divides the area of the country into seven planningstatistical regions. These regions are the following: Central Hungary: Budapest and Pest county Central Transdanubia: Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom and Veszprém counties West Transdanubia: Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas and Zala counties South Transdanubia: Baranya, Somogy and Tolna counties North Hungary: Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves and Nógrád counties North Great Plain: Hajdú-Bihar, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties South Great Plain: Bács-Kiskun, Békés and Csongrád counties 15
