1990 POPULATION CENSUS Detailed data based on a 2 per cent representative sample (1992)

C/ Housing, the housing conditions of the population

Nearly half (48 per cent and 43 per cent) of the tenement dwellings are in the capital and in the provinciai towns, respectively. The 416 000 tenement dwellings of Budapest — since their number has not changed signif icantly since 1980 — go on to form the majority (54 per cent) of dwellings in the capital. The fact that tenement dwellings are in generál, smaller (three quarters of them are one- or two room flats), than those occupied by title of ownership, is alsó reflected in the lower average number of rooms the dwellings in Budapest which is lower than the respective average for the whole country (225 and, respectively, 237). 48. Since the last population census a further great improvement in the facilities of the dwellings has occurred whose pace, however, was smaller than in the previous decade. Already more than 3 millión dwellings almost (84.7 per cent) have piped water (from the network or from the house system). Provision with sewers is somewhat higher (85.2 per cent), — about half of them are public sewers and the other half are house sewers. Public sewers are almost exclusively limited to Budapest and to the úrban areas (96 per cent), while the majority of dwellings with house sewers (61 per cent), are to be found in rural areas. Provision with flush toilet is lower (75.6 per cent) compared to that with water conduit and sewer, respectively, which results from the provision under 60 per cent in the rural areas. Provision with gas is 87.5 per cent, but most dwellings using gas have only cylinder gas. It is worth to mentioning that the number of dwellings with cylinder gas decreased, which is accounted for only by the widening of the network of gas pipelines making it possible to change over to the use of piped gas. (Since 1980 more than 250 localities have been included in the network of gas pipelines.) 49.
