C/ Housirig , the housing conditions of the population On January 1, 1990, the number of dwellings in Hungary was 3 817 000, by 275 000 more than at the date of the previous population census. This increase of nearly 8 per cent, however, is much "smaller than the pace of growth by 12-14 per cent observed in the earlier decades. The increase in the number of dwellings registered at subsequent population censuses in the decades following World War II was never so low — neither numerically, nor proportionally. The main cause of the regress is that of the 1980s a gradual decrease in housing construction is characteristic. Nearly 60 per cent of the dwellings built since 1980 were built still in the first half of the decade and even the distribution of those built in the second five-year period is not proportionate to time but alsó reflects the declining tendency: can be stated: dwellings were built in the lowest number in 1989 (about 6 per cent). 42. The increase in the number of dwellings is different by settlement types. Two thirds of the totál growth occurred in the provinciai towns which is a very dynamical development since this settlement type has only a smaller share (42 per cent) in the housing stock of the country. The increase in Budapest corresponds to the capital's size, i.e the share of Budapest in the country's housing stock and in the latter's increase is equally 21 per cent. The increase in the housing stock of the rural areas is only 2 per cent. 43.
