The age-structure of the couples differs significantly from this in the case of cohabiting partners representing almost 5 per cent of all of married-couple-type families. Among the married couples the proportion of those where the husband is by 3-5 years older than his wife, is the highest (32 per cent) while the proportion of those where the husband is at least by 10 years older than his spouse amounts to 7 per cent The share of those married couples where the wife is by 1-2 years older is alsó 7 per cent The proportions decrease parallel with the increase in the difference in age to the benefit of the wife, and the share of families where the wife is at least by 6 years older than the husband does not even 2 per cent. This declining tendency, however, cannot be established in the case of cohabiting partners where the differences in age, the proportions, scarcely affected by mostly depend on whether the man or the woman is older. 41. In the case of nearly each fourth couple (27 per cent) the educational level of the husband in the case of each fifth (20 per cent) the educational level of the wife is higher. The latter proportion is by more than 3 per cent higher than in 1980. Thus in the relations between the educational levels of the spouses and cohabiting partners changes observed alsó in the educational attainment of the population by sex, are reflected. 37
