1990 POPULATION CENSUS Detailed data based on a 2 per cent representative sample (1992)

I. REVIEW OF THE DATA - A/ Main characteristics of the population

After a growth in the 1970-1980 period, from 1980 on the number of commuters feli alsó in agriculture and forestry, in transport, post and telecommunication as well as in commerce (by 14, 16 and 4 per cent, respectively), but in these major divisions — opposite to manufacturing and construction — still more commuters are employed than in 1970. In the other major divisions of the national economy — primarily characterized by rendering services — due to the growth in the numbers alsó the number of the commuters increased in the 1970s and in the 1980s to a greater and a smaller extent, respectively. In the beginning of 1990, commuters worked in the greatest number — 371 000 persons (36 per cent) — in manufacturing. In agriculture and forestry the proportion of commuters — similarly to that ten years before — was 16 per cent. At the same time, the proportion of commuters working in the major divisions characterized by rendering services increased (from 13 per cent to 18 per cent), inclusive the low number of those employed in water works and supply and in other material activities. In the 1980s, the extent of commuting decreased first of all in the fields of construction and transport, post and telecommunication, but still it is these two major divisions which employ the greatest proportion of commuters compared to the number of their workers. The number of commuters is higher than the average in manufacturing, too. It is worth mentioning that in agriculture and forestry, in 1970, only each tenth, in 1980, each fifth, in the beginning of 1990, already each fourth economically active person went to work to a locality other than the place of his residence. This latter change is related mainly to the fusion of producers' co-operatives and with the increasing significance of auxiliary production lines. 29.
