I. REVIEW OF THE DATA - A/ Main characteristics of the population

Through this, the most significant difference in the age-structure of the two sexes continued to increase: at present 16 per cent of the males and 22 per cent of the females are 60 year old and older, as against the 15 and 19 per cent, respectively, in 1900. In the other major age-groups not only the direction of the proportional changes — a decline among those under 40 years and an increase among the older adults (40-59 year old) — is equal but its extent, too, is similar. 8. In the úrban areas, except the capital, the number of the elderly grew by 15 per cent. In the 1980s there was a slight but unfavourable change in the composition of the population aged 15 or over by marital status: the proportion of those married feli in both sexes, the proportion of the divorced grew significantly and that of the never married increased moderately. The widowed represented practically the same proportion at the beginning and at the end of the period. The low proportion of those married is partly accounted for by the change in the age-structure, i.e. by the decline in the number of the 20-29 year old population which is most important in respect of marriage. The slight growth in the proportion of widows was caused first of all by the increasing trend of the mortality of males. The proportion of the divorced grew by 2 per cent in both sexes. Since 1980 the number of divorced males has increased by 45 per cent, that of the divorced females by 35 per cent. This latter phenomenon was caused, besides the great increase in the number of divorces, by the decline in the number of remarriages. 9
