BEVEZETŐ

INTRODUCTION The results of the 1990 population census are published by the Hungárián Statistical Office in a series of publications. The first volume of this series contains the preliminary results of the census, while later a volume includes the most important data combinations based on a 2-percent sample taken from the census material. As continuations of the series of publications, the volumes with the detailed demographic, occupational, household, family and housing data of the 19 counties and of Budapest as well as the data collection containing their summarized, country-level informations were published. Every volume of the series of publications has also the most important results of the previous population censuses adapted to the concepts used at present and to the present regional division. In conformity with its Publishing traditions, the Hungárián Central Statistical Office publishes independent topic volumes with the detailed data of the various main subjectmatters (demography, occupation, household and family, dwelling and building). One of them is the present publication, which contains the data representing the demographic characteristics of the population. The volume consists of five chapters. The chapter "Summary data" gives an overview of the changes in the demographic characteristics of the population. The "Detailed data" contain the cross-tabulations of 1990 data according to the country as a whole, to Budapest, to the úrban and rural areas. The chapter "County data" presents the main data aggregated in county lines, while that of "Data according to size-groups of localities" contains data on the basis of the population size of the úrban and rural areas. The "Appendix" gives an overview of the age and cohort composition of the population since the first Hungárián population census. The volume is completed by the explanation of the concepts used and by a table of contents in English.
